NEW PLYMOUTH /TARANAKI POP/ROCK CULTURE, notes and musings

Sunday it is and I'm thinking about New Plymouth/Taranaki and the un/underdocumented side of local Pop/Rock culture..a few reference points in no particular order

REX AND THE ROADRUNNERS:  All I recall is the name Rex Hagerty and seeing these guys playing in the Senior Citizens Hall once (Now called Age Concern and just up from the current Senior Citizens Hall). Memory is a wonderful things but I recall Rolling Stones, Animals,Pretty Things and Spencer Davis Group songs sounding powerful in a rather empty room. One of the first times I recall reading a gig poster was one advertising one of their gigs there. They appeared to play there alot. I'm guessing this was around 1968/69/70 which would have meant I was 13/14/15 years old and my mates and I having no money to get in. This might have been earlier as it well could have been pre 10pm pub closing which started in 1967.

We looked and listened through the partially open door. Who were the other people in the band, did they play out of town? Did they record????

JOHN AVERY WAREHOUSE,CURRIE STREET : again Schoolboy time for me. I know that Le Frame played there. Saw the ad in the paper. They were the Auckland band with a local guy Doug Thomas on vocals plus people from Music Convention and The Underdogs. They had a single out on Zodiac Records called Knock on Wood (yes ,that song) and it was a brilliant version. Their appearance on C'Mon ( a pop culture TV show at the time) upset a few people.  Again my mates and I made an attempt to go to this gig. People were having a flour bomb fight on the stairs, we ran away from the craziness happening further up the stairs. Have always wondered but never asked about who were the visionaries behind this and the other events that must have happened there. It was where Centre City is now

CRYSTAL GALLEON: A great band,.Jewel Eyed Judy, Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac and Wishbone Ash songs sounding magic upstairs in The Tasman Hotel to full houses. Marine Lounge ??? Ross Haliday on Guitar, also other ex Julius West members... Chick, Grant Houston?. Am I right?. They also played upstairs above the Ski Shop on Currie Street..A venue run by Murray Horne/Horn whose Dad owned the Ski Shop. I was there the night it got shut down (A Friday)

THE VALLEN BROTHERS BAND:  Saw these guys playing to about 4 people , myself included in the Red Room of the White Hart Hotel once. Two Brothers , Barry and ???. and two more people. Barry had plans and was talking about Australia etc that night.saying that that was the way to go. No-one here understands or appreciates us, Management company was sorting it etc.

Nick Cotterell (spelling) might had been the drummer but I;m sure he was not playing that night. They self released a 7 inch single in 1985 titles being Gathering Clouds/Forget It.   Eye Contact Records was their label name. Nick gave me his cassette tape of their Rock Opera about 10 years ago which was to have been a double LP but their management company Procul Management went down the tubes in 1986 so it never happened. https://www.companyhub.nz/companyDetails.cfm?nzbn=9429039695314

TODD: Christian Punk Rockers who played a bunch of gigs in town. White Hart, Basement Bar amongst others. Always ready to play/help out. Good people. Mid 1990's? They released a tape I'm sure . Nick Stoneman and I thought we saw the singer/main man in the band the other day and that bought this idea of writing these things down back into my head so I'm doing it.

THE BLUES ROOM: This was a coffee lounge and to be confused with The Blue Room of the White Hart Hotel. It was where The Mill Bottle Store is now. Started by Murray Horne/Horn yet again (Family owned the building?)

Brilliant, trippy ,psychedlic walls and a lot of Blues /Rock stuff coming from the stereo. Boney Draws Blues Band were regulars/resident band. Murray was the drummer. Again I'm thinking 69/70/71. I recall Murray showing me a copy of the first Stooges album and telling me it would blow my mind. I finally heard it in 1976 and it did.

JULIUS WEST: These locals made a big impression on 15 year old me. Saw them at a Spotswood College Gala Day playing by East Block. Keep on Running(Spencer Davis Group) and Walking in The Park (Colosseum) were the two songs that stood out. They played a bunch of Y.M.C.A. sock hops. Heard that they cut four tracks at 2XP as it was called then and got an acetate copy each. I'm still hoping to see/get one.

NAKED THUNDER: Inglewood Band, Chris Rata Y.M.C.A. Sock Hop regulars I think

FOOTSTEPS: Wayne Cavaney (Ex Julius West) .St Joseph's Hall is the only place I saw these guys play. I enjoyed them, did they record anything?

BATH: Norrie Keenan and ????. Years late 70s/early 80's or later ???  They won a Battle Of The Bands type thing.

ST JOSEPH'S HALL: Heaps of pre punk type gigs happened there. Most I believe were organised by someone with the surname Masters. Worked at Atlas Engineering maybe. I recall a court report in the local paper (Taranaki Herald) about flogging wheelbarrows to pay for gig bills. Union Movement from Hamilton played 21st Century Schzoid Man there once on a Friday night.

WAR MEMORIAL HALL:Top Floor, Upstairs where the New Plymouth Library is now. Simple Image, The Challenge, The Fourmyula and a bunch of others played there.

WAITARA BAND: Big Afros and and about 4 Marshall Amps...??

RENAISSANCE FAIR: Opunake Band, seemingly Vanilla Fudge inspired. 2 brothers , Rhamans might have been their surname according to John McLeod. Played at St Joseph's Hall and the Y.M.C.A. sock hops.

Other things to take note of:

The Palladuim at Ngamotu Beach.

 John Fahey's bands.

Who was the Ex New Plymouth person now resident in Australia who in earlier facebook days compiled a lot of pics/recollections etc for a book that has never been published.

Waitara Rock Festival. What year?, I was there, caught the bus from New Plymouth. 3rd band in was Quincy Conserve I think.. I can picture Malcolm Hayward and recall hearing Brass. The promoter stopped them in first song. Festival was off, canned, kaput. I guess the 10 or so attendees was not enough to pay it's way. Who else played, who else was going to play that day?.

Doug Thomas/Le Frame..his earlier bands were who?

Bari and The Breakaways..Stratford/New Plymouth band. 2 lps, and 6 singles and 3 compilation releases. Well documented elsewhere.

I have not yet bothered yet to chase up/track down the people who can answer or expand on any of these notes. Have not gone to TNL, The Library to get blurry eyes and tired in a hot room while researching these things.

It might happen, it might not

STICKY FILTH 20TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Sticky Filth played all the Mushroom Balls except one and now have just celebrated the bands 20 years of existence with a show at the TSB showplace as part of the Taranaki Festival of the Arts and also the show was the release party for their new cd "Stainless".
By all accounts it was a great gig, lets hope they do plenty more.
you can check out the Arts Festival at www.taranakifest.org.nz.
This was originally written in 2006.
The publication date was altered when tidying up my little bit of cyberspace.

PHOENIX BODIES/ENKEPHALIN SPLIT 12INCH

First side played was Phoenix Bodies.Overamped super distorted math grind noise. You know it, these are great things to be. Bizarrely brings Old Lady Drivers to mind (worst comparison of the week by the way) but if you're down with that sort of thing
you'll dig this too.Plenty of tracks and feedback to burn.Obviously excellent
Enkephakin give us oodles of stop-start thrash and noise that is better than most of the shit that is on Relapse at the moment. Uber-tight playing, hard and fast, fast, fast. Again heaps of tunes, and these boys can really play. Both bands are cool and this platter deserves to be heard. Cool packaging too.

DAISUCK AND PROSTITUTE

Do you know of this Japanese band?.
I know they existed in 1981 as I have a record of them from that year.
What are the other records by this band.?.
When I do a google search I find a couple of sites that I cannot read and I seen to have trouble making those translation things work.
I have heard of a second lp and it appears from these japanese sites that one of them went onto doing solo stuff and that might have come out on the wonderful Captain Trip label.
Went back to Google.com to do a bit of searching..like I said earlier one japanese site mentions releases on the Captain Trip label. I went to their site www.captaintrip.co.jp and could not figure out which of their many interesting releases were connected to Daisuck and Prostitute.
Also tried www.infoseek.livedoor.net and some other letters which has a discography but I could not figure out
where band releases ended and solo stuff by ?????? started. I got this by searching for "mutant pub" on Google

Any clues??

Additional info received on the band after inquiries on the divinerites Radio Birdman/Australian Rock discussion group. Thanks to Kou for the following
The band name was Daisuck Yoshino and The Prostitute,
Daisuck Yoshino is/was a teacher

Discography in japanese is at http://you.m78.com/yoshino.html

sound samples of later work can be found at

http://indiesmusic.com/itemview.asp?id=883

and

http://indiesmusic.com/itemview.asp?id=890

Also thanks to Jacshark on the same group for this info
Jay Hinman's Agony Shorthand site (Is this the Jay Hinman of the wonderful Superdope mag?) has something on the band in there.apparently from around mid 2004. Supposedly the later records are more sedate jazz. Time to track them down and find out I guess.

I bought my first Daisuck & Prostitute LP at Mount Olympus which crumbled into Exotique Imports or Vice Versa in the late 80s. This was the golden era when Seattle's Bumbershoot hosted such trips as Ornette's Prime Time back to back with Spinal Tap.

Anyway, the Daisuck LP languished there through changes of ownership and successive sales and markdowns until I stumbled in and bought it. I have obviously been looking for their records ever since.

The interesting thing is that the only other record of theirs that I have ever come across I found in the basement of a "junker" in White Rock, BC. Pretty close to Seattle but a long way from Tokyo.

In any event, that makes for 2 different equally fab LPs for sure by the original noisesters. Who knows about anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if we get to hear of an indie soundtrack some day with a freak out by them that noone knows anything about.

Good luck - it's worth the effort.

DAISUCK AND PROSTITUTE PART 2, sorta out of date now there are things like Discogs which hopefully will have the info you need

Current searching reveals the following
found at http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/06/mp3_download_di.html

Yoshino Daisuck and Prostitute [listen] "Yami No Naka No Doppen Kenken" [listen] [listen] (MP3)
There's some variants in the spelling of this artist (I've seen Daisuke, Daisaku), but there's no denying that this is pure downtown NYC 81 madness adapted via Tokyo 81. It's amazing how bands like Love Live Life Plus One and Les Rallizes Denudes were bowling some of the same balls that Western counterparts like the VU and Stooges were dealing at exactly the same time to no acclaim whatsoever even after the spotlight had been shown on the American bands as being key influences on everything. So it's no surprise that something like this was happening right around the same time as DNA, Mars, and Teenage Jesus. I totally dig the cement-mixer guitars and frantic sax amidst upside down dance rhythms, I know nothing else really about them besides the fact some claim they moved in a Lounge Lizardsy direction later on. I dig this a lot and would love to hear more of the No Wave offerings the Land of the Rising Sun had to offer; the uber-pricy Friction reissues were somewhat disappointing, anyone out there have a line on any stuff from bands like Gunjogacrayon, 3/3, S-Ken and Lizard? There's a rotisserie chicken in it for you.

91. YOSHINO DAISAKU: “Yoshino Daisaku Ranpu Seizokojo” (Super Fuji) (Sealed2 CD Set). Limited press reissue of this hideously rare 1974 private press rural folk rarity. Brother release accompanying the Otowa Shin disc, both totally indispensable obscurities that will cater perfectly to your eclectic tastes and hunger for archival sounds. I guess that Yoshino Daisaku is not immediately a name you all are familiar with. Yoshida Daisaku is one of the key-figures of the Yokohama sound, active till this day on the city's live circuit. This disc here is a reissue of his sole album, a private pressing out of 1974 and a real stunner it is. In the seventies, Yoshida spearheaded the city7s folk rock movement, when the eighties rolled along he became active in the post punk free form music scene and these days he is sculpting his way into acid blues tinted sonics. But what we have here is a recording the Japanese like to label as a privately released acid folk rock disc that saw the light of day in limited numbers way back in 1974. Yoshida's compositions have a certain straight American Rock dynamic that simultaneously embrace also a country rock and slightly acidic folk tinted approach that to a certain extent has some affinity to the Jacks sounds. Bluesy, yet folky, Yoshida's sonic world has elements of both, mingles them into one driving entity that even evokes images of an oriental Neil Young. In all it is an essential disc that sheds another beam of light upon a part of the Japanese rock scene most of us didn't even know existed of ailed to notice it was there. And just as is the case with Otowa Shin's disc, this one is a disc that grows on you after repeated listenings. The original album is represented on the 1st CD and as a bonus one gets a rare 1975 live recording spread over the 2nd CD. Again a stunning reissue, shedding a rare look upon a forgotten scene. Highly recommended and essential if you dig the Otowa Shin release. Get it before they vanish, only 500 copies were pressed and bound to dry up quickly…..Price: 30 Euro

PUKEKO ...Freeing in The Rock World or whatever Old Neil Young/Diamond said

This record exists as a document of a night of fun.

20 copies on Lathe Cut and you can download all you want

To celebrate being in the same room Pukeko are proud to present their first record. This 10 inch album represents our early wild days. Reflecting on its creation, the band shared the following statement: “We made this record in a lounge space in Otaki in mid 2022. It was kind of a classic lounge space, shared with an assortment of beer bottles and food wrappers over a few hours behind one of several doors leading outside. A windowed room lit by string lights and the odd lava lamp, the walls a palimpsest of posters and gig fliers.

There was a grimy rug, cluttered gear in various stages of use and abandonment, and the air seemed to hang in a permanent film of smoke residue and stale beer. We recorded to a oppo-lite over the course of several minutes - we’d just start the beats, hit ‘record’ and let fly. We had a vague sense of coalescence, or fomentation, like a glimpse of a thing in outline which you can’t yet see, but none of us knew at the time that this was the record that would mark the beginning of our life as a non - touring band and would initiate our connections to so many (now long-gone) friends, familiars and collaborators. Twenty minutes feels like both a lifetime and the blink of an eye – measurable but impossible to quantify. These eight tracks are a snapshot of our earliest incarnation: flying blind, but high on the freedom of experimentation and filled with hope for things to come.. Thanks Moon Duo

No, we did not consider putting real Pukeko feathers in each record. That is deliberate govt misinformation. Also do not go looking in your local or National Library or archive for this record as they will not have it

Check it out here. if clicking on the link won't work, do the cut and paste.

Black Highway Mob LP called Mongrel 61....it's here and you don't care

Ok, you liberal, animal loving, yacht club dwelling beer bellied individual, here it is. Another Record that you will not want or need. get it, file it away between your Black Flag and Black Pearl lp's. We all know that record collecting is/has been the new cool thing to do for a while now. Add this to your shelf  It don't matter that you have more records than you have time left on this earth to play them. Again this is a totally unplayable record. Just buy and file. You know the drill.. and yeah, happy, merry whatever. Front and back cover pics for you .Of course if you have actually got this far and desire one of these records... get in touch... through here, facebook, discogs..whatever works. trades for similar projects is always a good thing. Drinking Flame beer while doing this. it's ok, nothing special. just like this record really. What else can I tell you, the internet connection here is bad, cannot upload photo's because other people in this house are playing Fortnight.."thou shall not lag" apparently. Seems like I get to see/hear 6 bands tonight in a paddock then sleep in the back of the van (Hotel Estima) due to having 2 beers. Life is getting better every day

TONKA ON DISCOGS

Good afternoon. having found 2 rather rough copies of Tonka's first record RUAPEHU so I proceeded to update Tonka on Discogs
This should get you there
 https://www.discogs.com/artist/516851-Tonka .
If not, this technology is just too advanced for me to understand and you will need to use the search buttons on your laptop or whatever cool device you have

Learning how to make noise that appeals to me as a pop muisc fan and record it is an interesting thing to do. Is this Music?, who knows, who really cares
